I am glad you took the time to enlighten fellow Muslims about it
You should also address about Jizya too .. it is so twistedly interpreted by non friends of Muslims. Amir Ali has written very well on Jizya.
Every citizen in the modern days pays taxes that takes care of social causes.( pay to the needy etc, trying to create a society of sympathy and empathy) In Islamic governments of those times, the zakat was compulsory to Muslims( is still so and Muslims pay taxes and zakat , without any govt. asking them to do so) and so the Non Muslims paid Jizya , because they did not pay zakat . As simple as that. Amir Ali argues that most times the amount of Jizya to be paid was much less than zakat ,so some whose hearts were not touched by Islam decided to stay Non Muslim so they can pay less taxes.or ( Jizya), but of course whose hearts were touched by the beauty of Islam , that emphasizes on meritocracy , and helps establishes equitable society in the true sense, they readily accepted Islam and paid more dues in the form of zakat than the Jizya.

This falsification and demonization of Jizya needs to be dispelled too. I am glad Jemima brought up the issue.
Thanks Mike for what all you do . i.e. Trying to create Peace.
May God bless you and your family with peace and Progress.
Naemahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16234146534097706213noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1670103292460933868.post-3569940648256705312010-01-20T06:45:13.974-06:002010-01-20T06:45:13.974-06:00I'm wondering what to do about more robust ant...I'm wondering what to do about more robust anti-Christian/Jewish verses, like Sura 9:29, for example -> the Arabic of that is pretty clear and the institution it sets up (jizya) was then used by the Islamic empire to oppress non-Muslim peoples for centuries. (See Mark Durie's recent "The Third Choice", which has garnered excellent critical reviews).

Good job on Surah 1, though; why do you think that hundreds of tafsir writers for over a thousand years all read it as being an invective against Jews and Christians? I'm also intrigued that the five daily prayers, in the *Arabic*, also reinforce this anti-People-of-the-Book intepretation. Do you think it's time for a new Islamic liturgy?Jemima Bouchernoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1670103292460933868.post-15803601294919171382009-12-26T15:06:20.247-06:002009-12-26T15:06:20.247-06:00The Yusuf Ali translation of 1:7 seems a bit confu...The Yusuf Ali translation of 1:7 seems a bit confusing to me.
